Wilson, Glen
Artist Statement
As an artist, I have learned to appreciate all forms of the visual arts, although I am especially drawn to painting, ceramics, and sculptures, where you can see the hand of the artist at work. When I view artwork, I not only see what was created, but how. I look for the balance of shape and form, of color and contrast. Does the piece hold my interest? Draw me in? Encourage me to view the piece from all angles? Does the piece invite an emotional response? These are the questions and revelations that are a part of the creative process I use when I am sculpting.
I enjoy sculpting in stone primarily because of the challenge of removing only that which is not part of my vision. The stone itself adds to that challenge with its unique color variations, veining, cracks, inclusions, and other unknowns. Most of my recent artwork has been in Soapstone, because of its carve-ability and the variety of colors that are available. For future projects, which are in the works, I will be using Alabaster, Chlorite, and Acoma Jet (a form of coal).
Inspiration for my art can come from anywhere. A simple representational line drawing turns into a Fetish Bear or a Seated Figure. A small piece of driftwood turns into a Guardian figure carved out of sandstone. Discussions regarding a previous sculpture form ideas for another. Even the geometric beauty of the Korean alphabet can be turned into a unique sculpture by simply changing one’s perspective.
About Glen Wilson
Although mostly self taught in stone carving, my formal education began when I was 19. While attending college to study Architecture I was encouraged to take art classes. I studied Art Appreciation, Drawing, Painting, Ceramics, and Bronze casting. My interest in stone carving began by carving a 90lb sandstone boulder with a nail punch! Several nail punches, actually.
Even though I continued to create art, my artistic career was put on hold with the joys and responsibilities of parenthood. My wife and I have been married for 37 years. We have 3 children and 4 grand children. After retiring in 2006 we have set up shop in Sisters, Oregon, to continue sharing my lifelong passion for sculpting with others.
