Artist Statement
I remember sitting in church as a little girl, staring in awe at the colored glass windows. The intensity of the colors stirred me. They still do. I once set a piece of purple glass with white swirls in my window for months, just because looking at the patterns made me feel peaceful.
The glass I choose is usually because of the way it makes me feel when I look at it or run my fingers over the coolness, exploring the texture of the glass. Spectrum’s Wispy glass and glue chip are my favorites. Glue chip reminds me of Jack Frost’s paintings on car windshields on brisk cold mornings.
I particularly like to make angels and watch their little “personalities” develop as they are completed. I am currently exploring the world of fused glass. It is good for my control issues! Sometimes things come out of the kiln different than expected. In spite of some disappointment, this is good for me and gives me more ideas. I am having fun!
About Sheilah Sherman
I am semi-retired and living in Central Oregon. I am a mother of two and have two granddaughters that I love to spend time with.
I was in my 40’s when a friend introduced me to working with stained glass and I was hooked. I wanted to make beautiful stained glass gifts for family and friends, as well as some for myself. Co-workers soon started asking me to make pieces for them and our annual charity auction.
Drawers of scrap glass started building up and that led to making mosaic garden pavers. After I retired from my job of almost 30 years I wanted to learn something new and enrolled in a glass fusing class hoping to find another way to use those glass scraps. I discovered I could create functional as well as beautiful pieces. Soon family and friends were giving me their “wish” lists and placing custom orders.
Besides continuing to have fun working with glass, I am hoping to provide myself with a supplement to my retirement income.
