Thorson, Larry

Artist Statement
Throughout my life I have been around ALL aspects of woodworking, The smell of Douglas Fir being cut, Sawdust in my eyes and up my nose. Every kind of wood smells so different. The aroma of Juniper on a lathe is almost overwhelming. The smell and look and feel of wood is one of my passions. Building structures with wood to provide shelter or to cross rivers or to play with are all beautiful things. Gluing up pieces and turning them on my lathe is very rewarding to me. Every piece is different one of a kind.

Oh! I almost forgot the down side of woodworking, the occasional hammer on the finger or Super sliver. But I wouldn’t trade the pain for all the joy of creating with wood.

About Larry Thorson
I was born in Los Angeles, California in 1945. I am married to my true love Mary. We have one son Michael and three grandchildren. Also we have Hunter our rescue dog, a Red 2 year old Border Collie with butterscotch eyes who loves the Frisbee.

I started my carpenter apprentice schooling shortly after graduating from Western High in Anaheim California. I worked union my entire career. After earning a pension from California and Oregon, I retired November 2007.

I have loved music and woodworking my whole life. During my youth I tried to see every concert I could from the 60s & 70s. I still listen to good old Rock ‘n Roll while working in my shop.

Mary and I moved to La Pine in 1999 from Sandy, Oregon. We bought 2 acres in Wagon Trail Ranch, which had a small home. Through the years we have added on and 2 years ago we expanded our kitchen. I bought some Blue ‘n Buggy pine from a rancher in Paisley, Oregon. I built kitchen cabinets for Mary and started working with the wood, making Lathe turned pieces, laminated and segmented bowls etc.

After a friend told me about Don Terra, I stopped by and met Teri. I am very impressed with the whole gallery and feel great about displaying my art with Teri and Don.
