Artist Statement
My Art / My Self -
As an only child I was sent to do “My Art” since I could walk. “My Art” became my baby sitter, best friend, teacher, entertainer and a therapeutic comfort. “My Art” helped support me and my family. The periods of my paintings walk in step beside the stages of my personal development.
My goals differ with each work. I paint from my own emotions and wish to move the viewer the same way. Sometimes a painting tells a story, or makes the viewer happy or whimsical, at other times sad or nostalgic. Sometimes I want the viewer to think and share a message. At other times I want the eye to just relax and enjoy a journey through color and design.
Native American, spiritual pieces, the myths and legends series and symbolic-surrealism are carefully thought out and researched. Works in floral, fantasy, wildlife and other natural wonders are usually painted for the pure joy and pleasure of the subjects themselves.
My paintings con tinue to allow me to express myself and connect with those outside of “self.” I have evolved into the woman, artist, and teacher I am today because of “My Art” I continue to grow.
About Gloria Tinker
Tinker was born in Seattle, Washington, raised three children, and now devotes herself completely to her art. She lives with her husband, two horses, four AKC chows, a pet goat, a large variety of bird like, and a blind parrot with a vocabulary that elicits envy from many.
Tinker’s affinity for art has taken her through most every facet art has to offer.
From early awards to eight years as an art show promoter, teaching art at the college level, to gallery ownership and the study, trial, error and application that brings her to where she is today.
A conservationist, her choices lean towards nature and Native American subjects. In addition she explores painting exotic animals, fantasy, surrealism, flora, and fauna Tinker tends to paint in series doing several renderings of one theme: for example several watercolors of exotic birds and flowers, might be painted for one exhibition. Another example is Native American works painted in oils for a Western exhibit.
Tinker approaches her paintings on varied levels according to the mood or emotion she feels about the subject, When asked how she approaches her subjects, Tinker says, “My approach is up close and personal. The artist must see the flutter in a still wing, see beneath the surface and beyond the obvious.” Tinker strives to maintain detail while she creates a sense of the wild and free spirit.
Tinker studied fine art at the University of Oregon, Lane Community College, and two years at the Eugene School of commercial Art where see gained a degree in 1972. Her works are displayed in private and corporate collections throughout the Pacific Northwest and around the world. Tinker was an Art Instructor at Lane Community College for fourteen years, teaching oils and watercolor classes and workshops. She currently teaches for Willamalane.
Tinker now has over 40 limited edition prints on the market, two international exhibits, and many works in progress. Her art has evolved to receive numerous publications in today’s market: calendars, engagement books, cover plates and magazines.
