Deb Sether Artist Statement
Becoming an artist is/was my life’s dream. It wasn’t until later in life that I had the courage to “take the plunge” and recreate myself as an artist. After taking a clay class in 1981, clay has been a continuing outlet for my creative expression. I love getting my hands dirty and creating hopes, dreams and feelings in a three dimensional form.

My friends have told me that “we always know your opinion” – working things out in clay is a way of expressing myself that isn’t quite so “in your face”. Until recently, I had been exploring the Native American themes of animal totems and how they applied to me as a woman – a very thoughtful, introspective, spiritual and at times, painful process.

Then, a year ago, I was asked to participate in the “Dog Show” – a display of canine imagery. I had a blast making pieces for the show. It was FUN.. I would find myself chortling while working on a dog. And, it is great to see the happy reactions
people have to the dogs. They are fun and they make us smile. Not a bad thing during these times.

So, like my dogs, I’m not pedigreed in art school. I do what I do because it’s my passion. Working in clay brings me a lot of satisfaction and pleasure. It’s really pretty simple. I hope to help people feel good and affect their life in a positive way.
