Robertson, Steve

Artist Statement
Steve Robertson My first awareness and desire to create ceramic art started when I was in high school. Sure of my desire but unsure of my abilities in ceramics, I took a more traditional path and focused on woodworking. I enjoyed working with wood but felt somewhat constrained by my linear approach to it – I was taught that everything should be straight, square and strong.  Clay on the other hand, provides a non-linear medium from which to work with.

It was not until some 35 years after graduating high school that I finally ventured into the world of clay. Inspired by the creativity and skills of my oldest son Chris, we embarked on a father/son project to construct our own kick wheel.  The wheel worked out very well and served its purpose for several years (primarily because it was straight, square and strong!). After a time I purchased an electric wheel and used kiln but soon became frustrated with my lack of success using cone 6 glazes. After much searching and experimenting I became interested in the earthly beauty of barrel and saggar firing.

The ceramic pieces I produce are done with the help of my youngest son Garrett and my wife Denise. As a family we have spent many wonderful hours on the coast of Oregon collecting various types of seaweed and grasses to surround our pots during the firing process.  The natural materials result in colorations that are unique to each piece – so unique that we have been known to pull pieces from the barrel at 1:00am just to see the results!

Working in clay provides me with an opportunity to satisfy the non-linear side of my creativity; to spend time together as a family and to share my work with others.

About Steve Robertson
Steve began his ceramic art career much later in life than he had ever envisioned, hoped, or planned.  After 25 years in public service Steve embarked upon his second career at the age of 53.  Most of his skills have been self taught and applied through research and experimentation. “From start to finish, working with clay is not only a time to be creative but more importantly it is a time to reflect and appreciate what I have been blessed with – a wonderful family with a sense of adventure.”
