Artist Statement
The incredible colors and textures in fabric create within me a kaleidoscope of ideas. From that kaleidoscope comes art filled with contrasting colors, design and texture.
Each piece of wall art contains signature folds of fabric that are turned to reveal highlights of contrasting fabrics. The turns are made possible through a technique known as couching. Silk and synthetic fibers are used for the couching and beading, stones, gems, leather or other embellishments are added.
Every piece is an original and starts with a sketch of the design. Fabrics are then selected, cut and pressed. A sewing machine is used for the actual construction of the piece and it is usually at this point that the piece developes its personality and is named. Once the body of the piece is sewn, fibers are selected and the couching applied. Each piece then has hand-rubbed leather, beads, gems or stones applied. All beading, gems and stones are applied by hand. The piece is then mounted, matted and framed.
