Artist Statement
I enjoy using vibrant, invigorating colors which are responsive to light and animated when illuminated by the warm light of the setting sun or the flickering light of a candle. The tribal and earthy looks ground and sooth while the patterns and colors invigorate. I hope to share my work with others so they too can feel the vigor and excitement I feel.
I started painting after a trip to Australia where I purchased a small Aboriginal dot art painting. I loved the connection the painting caused me to feel with nature. While I had no formal training, I was eager to experiment on my own works. I try to create new patterns and colors that will work together and really pop. I reach for a look that is simple and elegant, but enjoy patterns which are complex at the same time. I have chosen to work with acrylic for the ability to change the viscosity of the paint to achieve the rounded dots. My pieces started on canvas and now include paper and board, both of which lend themselves to matting and framing. I like the crisp look it provides.
When I first became motivated to paint, I had a high anxiety job with a lot of international travel. Time spent on art gave me an outlet to explore my creativity and something to enjoy personally. With my work, I am attempting to create beauty, that moves me and hopefully you. It should give you feelings of excitement, peaceful ponder and life energy. I look forward to hearing which piece of art speaks to you.
About Artist Sean Harbison
I spent my first 18 years on Grand Island, NY an island in the middle of the Niagara River, just above Niagara Falls. While I loved all the area had to offer, I dreamed of moving West to the mountains from an early age. After studying mechanical engineering at Purdue University, I moved to California in 1995 and began a 14 year career in Silicon Valley developing and selling equipment to the computer industry. In 2009 I moved north and settled in Bend to enjoy the lifestyle Central Oregon has to offer. I love skiing, cycling, hiking, backpacking and flying. I began painting in 2000.
