Howard, Larry
Artist StatementI started carving while elk hunting with my father in the early 1980’s. My first attempt was a duck carved from lodge pole pine from around our camp.
Currently fish species from the Pacific Northwest are my main subjects. All my work is hand carved and painted and I mostly use Jelutong wood from the Philippines. My fish are easily recognized to their intended species, but are somewhat impressionistic as they tend to be a bit healthy “fat” and their appendages “fins” are frequently disproportionally large for their body size. Ascetically speaking, I like the visual effect of these modifications. (Some have suggested there is a deeper subconscious meaning!)
Finding the perfect mounting materials, whether it’s limbs, rocks, driftwood or roots has become an adventure in the great outdoors that the family enjoys taking part in.
