Artist Statement
I can’t remember when I wasn’t creating, beginning with creative writing in grade school when I wrote horse stories (often with me as the heroine!). Over the years my creativity had many expressions including co-creating a line of hand made clothing. My hands are my means of expression for my creative thoughts and I have learned to keep them busy so they stay out of trouble!
My first encounter with beads was in junior high when I received a necklace project as a Christmas gift. However, it was not until years later, after visiting an art gallery with my father, that I began creating with beads on a regular basis.
My current work is a combination of free form beading and bead embroidery around focal pieces. Those focal pieces include semi-precious stones, pearls, findings and unique handmade beads. Whatever jumps out and says take me home.
Each of my pieces, like any handmade item, is unique, one-of-a-kind. I can’t say they are truly designed out ahead of time. More often I begin with a general idea and the pieces I want to incorporate and then the beads take me on a journey. My work is more intuitive than planned. I have learned to trust the beads and the process. I have also learned if I try to make it the way I “think” it should be it never works out, so I let go and let it be.
I enjoy contrasts so my work encompasses matt/shiney, large/small, rough/smooth. Often times the sides of my pieces are not the same, but they are balanced. Again, where ever the beads want to take it. Like many artists I take my inspiration from the world around me and I am fascinated by color and shape combinations in nature. In sports you often hear the term “he’s in the Zone” and when I am heavily into a piece, I am in the zone where time is irrelevant and everything runs smoothly.
No matter how a piece turns out, my objective is to create a beautiful piece of art. A piece that will help every woman who wears one feel her own specialness.
About The Artist Judith George
I grew up in the beautiful Willammette Valley, namely Springfield. After graduating from H.S. I attended the U of O and received a B.A. in Education. Since then I’ve been like a rolling stone living in several states including Oklahoma, North Dakota, Idaho and now California. I also had the experience of living in Spain for three years. Along the way I picked up a second degree at Boise State University, in Accounting. In 1999, after an accident from a fall from my horse, we moved to California. I’ve had careers in Education and Banking, raised two sons and had lots of fun along the way. Currently we split our year between the desert (Indio, CA) and Oregon and the Pacific Northwest.
All along my journey my creative side was expressing itself in a variety of ways, never far out of sight even when in a very left brained industry such as banking. I have sold my jewelry at Art & Wine Festivals, boutique clothing stores, New Age shops and Art Gallerys. My art is self taught although it began with art classes and exposure to artistic people at the U of O. I love to learn new things and continually search for different techniques to bring freshness to my work.
