Donna Gleckler Artist Statement
I feel creative sparks when I gather materials which seem both similar and disparate. I want to find common ground among objects and bring forth a resonance among them when they are combined. At the same time their differences must play off each other so that the contrast will help us to see, to really SEE.

I see relationships between various materials and I want to highlight that so each material points out the essence of itself and echoes the essences of the other materials in a piece of art. Sometimes nature sings her exuberance through me. Ordinary objects have Extraordinary patterns and textures which excite my imagination. It is particularly appealing to re-claim, re-purpose and re-imagine a material. I don’t want to be constrained by the everyday name of an object. I want to escape typical definitions. That is when the fun starts!

Some of the materials I have used include vintage toaster insulators, beads, deer bones, broken safety glass , shells, rocks, old jewelry, “waste” from glass tile designers, fabrics and the wings of butterflies who died naturally. How is a piece of a discarded music score like an ocean wave? How is the opalescence of a pearl like glass which is sometimes like a rock? When I create a harmonious whole that satisfies, intrigues and draws the viewer in to see with new eyes, it gives me a sense of excitement.

About Donna Gleckler
Donna Gleckler began her assemblage art part-time while working full time as an interior designer. With over twenty years experience doing both residential and commercial design she wanted an additional creative outlet. Her first art piece won Best of Show [wall hangings] at the Sonoma County Ca Harvest Fair.

As a four year old, looking at home magazines was a favorite pastime. It fed an interest in both art and design. When a magazine showed several different pictures she spent time comparing them trying to figure out which one was “best” and why.

For Donna Gleckler, assemblage art is seamless with interior design. Whether it is rearranging walls in a remodel, redoing furnishings or shifting shapes, textures and colors in an artwork, it all springs from the same impulse to create.
