Hoskisson, Cindy

Artist Statement
I have been working in clay for more then 30 years.  I have explored many types of firings and clay processes.  I enjoy throwing on the wheel and alternative firing the most.  I have been lucky to be involved for the past 24 years in wood-firing and in the past five years I have started learning about and enjoying pit-firing. But my true love is Raku.  I love to make what I think of as very classic, somewhat feminine forms and then enjoying what the glaze and firing process do to bring out the true beauty of each piece.  In the past couple of years I have started adding texture through stamping or pressing into the pieces… one person described them as “quilted”… I am really enjoying this new direction and feel that it really adds to the depth of color in the pieces.  The joy of Raku is that each piece is a surprise just by the very nature of the process but as with all things we do I have learned over the years to control the glaze somewhat, and by adding some bright colors of red, blue and sometimes a little yellow they become true jewels for your mantle or shelf.
