Artist Statement
Kimberly Costa I am an art teacher in Bend and passionate about painting. Art is my most amazing form of individual expression! Since childhood I have been so fascinated by the art world, that I decided to become a middle school art teacher. In my own artwork, I am continuously inspired by nature and by my art students. Teaching new mediums and learning about various art movements has helped me to develop my personal artistic style. Based on reflections of my travel experiences, I often integrate cultural genres in my artwork as well. My paintings mark an intersection between abstraction and representation.

Nearly six years ago, I was in a life-changing car accident. I lost the full use of my dominant arm. Naturally, this was a transformational experience for me. Each day I am reminded of that event, but I consciously move forward and pursue my dreams. I have gradually re-learned many daily activities, including painting. I now paint with my non-dominant hand. Through this difficult endeavor, I have furthered my artistic career and have continued to create art in a new style.

Painting is my most peaceful time when I can escape from the realities of daily life. Watercolor is one of my favorite art mediums. The fluidity and spontaneity of watercolor has always captured my attention. After many years spent studying and photographing the patterns in nature, my work is often full of organic shapes that are representative of several aspects of the natural world.

Many of my landscape paintings are inspired by the Cascade Mountains. More recently, I have been using crumpled tissue paper to add texture and dimension to the mountains in my acrylic paintings. I enjoy experimenting with a variety of mixed media materials and creative techniques. Multiple art styles are often reflected in my artwork. My goal as an artist is to capture the simplicity of life and to transport the viewer into another world for a moment.
