Davis, Gloria
Artist Statement
Thirty years ago, I walked into an art gallery and fell in love with the wonderful, rich pastel paintings an artist had on display. That was only the beginning…
I am an animal-lover and a history enthusiast, so painting the things I love most only makes sense. Sometimes I’m so excited about what I’m painting that I can’t wait to get up the next morning to see what I’ve done. When I work with oils or pastels, these mediums open up avenues that are totally different and that’s exciting. All I have to do then is choose a subject and do a little research, ha! That’s all!! But it is fun and very fulfilling. I love it!”
This Texas-born artist began her career drawing horses while in front of the fireplace in her artist aunt’s ranch house. She remembers sitting in the cab of her uncle’s old pickup as they de-horned and branded cattle, as well as riding the ranch horses with her cousin.
Over the years, she has developed a special interest in pastels and wildlife, which then led to oils and Indian portraits. While living in Oregon, she has entered her work in many Western and Wildlife art shows—the “Oregon Trails National,” among many others. She has also shown her paintings and pastels in several other galleries in Oregon.
Although only a part-time artist, painting has become a real passion for Gloria. She and her husband spend a great deal of time on the Oregon desert exploring, hunting and taking many photos of wildlife, old homesteads, beautiful scenery and the cowboys of the desert. Among other historical interests, the old Spanish missions have become inspirational subjects for her, as well. She has been greatly influenced by both Southern and Western lifestyles, which are reflected in her paintings. Although best known for her pastels and wildlife, her Western topics are also gaining in interest.
About Gloria Davis
I was born in Texas, spending childhood years in Texas and Louisiana, both of which abound in rich culture. When I was a teenager, I moved with my family to Oregon. I would say being an outdoor person is the true me; hunting, fishing, photography and history are my passions.
I began painting at the ripe old age of 35, although I grew up with a pencil in my hand, sketching everywhere I went. I’ve entered many Western and Wildlife art shows, including the “Oregon Trails National,” for several years. I’ve also entered paintings in many fairs and have won several awards—what fun those were!
My family and I lived on the Oregon desert for 10 years, without all of the comforts of home: electricity, running water, etc. What a great experience! It has made my love for wildlife and the outdoors an even more important element to my art.
