Eggert, Donald
Artist StatementI’ve been a foundry man all of my adult life. I mostly worked in the aerospace industry full time fascinated by the way castings were made. I set out to learn it all from start to finish. I owned and operated a foundry of my own in the 1980′s called Willamette Foundry and Machine.
I remember how fulfilled I felt by taking some sand, clay, water, metal, and heat to create intricate shapes from metal. Everyone used to tell me that this was more art than science and that’s where I did my first art casting in a sand mold from a wax pattern. This same bronze sculpture was displayed at the marine science center in Newport, Oregon for many years.
I started Santiam Bronze Works in November of 2003 with the goal in mind of providing a place to cast lost wax sculpture and green sand castings for art and industry in aluminum, bronze, and grey iron.
I took up sculpture in June of 2006 just to see what it was like from an artist’s prospective and it was then I discovered how much I liked working with clay. I have always been fascinated by Bigfoot, Wildlife, and Native American culture and lore which is where I get the inspiration for my sculptures.
About Donald Eggert
Donald Eggert began his career as a cast metal sculptor in June of 2006. Having spent most of his adult life working with cast metals his intent was to learn more about the needs of would be bronze sculptors and in doing so he found a way to express his interests in metal sculpture. In the years prior he always created the bronzes from someone else’s creations not taking the time to try it himself. His goal is to make metal sculpture that doesn’t break the bank. Don likes to make castings the old fashioned way by using tried and tested techniques and avoiding the use of machinery as much as possible. The name Santiam Bronze Works comes from two sources. Don’s uncles who were captains of industry in Lebanon, Oregon for many years and had owned a company called Santiam Foundry and Pattern Works. That company cast many of the manhole covers in this town which can still be seen today. The second source is Santiam Bronze Works is located 100 yards from the South Santiam River, Don’s favorite fishing hole.
