Brown, Helen
Artist StatementI enjoy the spontaneity of watercolor. When considering subjects to paint, I am attracted to those with interesting perspective, dramatic light and elements that are meaningful to me personally. Patterns and unique shapes are particularly interesting to me.I often use a pouring technique to achieve unified, balanced color and richness in my paintings. Much like the batik process, I pour luminous washes over wet paper, allow it to dry and then apply a resist product (rubber latex) in the areas where I don’t want any more paint to flow. This process continues until I have applied at least eight layers of thin color. In the end, the resist product is removed, revealing harmonious paintings with a unique quality about them.
