Artist Statement
Nature is at the base of what I create. It is straight forward yet subtle and simple. I love rough rock and stone, and the feel of clay spinning through my hands. It is wonderous to start with such basic materials and end up with works of art and function that are so satisfying. It is challenging to explore ways to create different things and how best to go about it. Trial and error is the most fun and the discoveries along the way, while often frustrating are very rewarding. Cutting a piece of stone to see what might lay inside is very cool. Finding a piece that has a special pattern or color and turning that into a pair of earrings or some other beautiful creation is very satisfying. The process of turning a lump of clay into a useful bowl or perhaps a lamp is just simply great fun.

About Crow Black
I have always been a physical person, so creating things with my hands comes natural. I have spent time as a professional chef, and house builder, a finish carpenter, and a custom yacht builder. Along the way I’ve taught skiing and snowboarding to kids and adults as well as the physically disabled. Being outdoors here in Central Oregon is great. Hiking, biking and fly fishing are some of the things I enjoy, as well as a cruise on a motorcycle once in a while.

Creating functional, beautiful things such as a simple mug or a large bread bowl is a way for me to fulfill the desire to make something useful and pleasant to look at. I encourage you to contact me if there is something special I might create for you.
