Binion, Bill
Artist StatementWhen I work with wood I’m reminded that as a product of nature. Each piece is one of a kind and each bird house will be one of a kind. I like working with cedar. The smell of the wood when first cut is great. I begin each bird house with a rough design. I then assemble, decorate, paint and finish each one differently.
When asked what is my favorite tool, I find it hard to pick just one. Each tool I use has a specific purpose. As an example, I use a compound miter saw to make all the rough cuts. My nail gun is a great time saver. I also use a wood burning iron to make the inlaid leaf designs.
I design my bird houses to fit the bird’s needs. I balance that with how they will stand up over time and how they will appeal to potential buyers. Although I use color because people’s tastes are different, I like to use a clear finish. This allows the natural grain of the wood to really to jump out.
